5-weeks: an introduction to inversions

Every Sunday: 19 May - 16 June, 14.30 - 15.45 (75 min), triyoga Ealing.

Always wanted to go upside down but unsure how to do it safely, or always a little too scared? In this 5-week course you’ll develop familiarity, strength, breath and body awareness to explore inversions safely and without rush.

Inversions are poses where the head is below the heart. We will start exploring poses such as downward dog, bridge pose and pyramid pose, working towards forearm balance, headstand and handstand. We will also bust some of the myths about inversions, such as ‘your brain gets bathed in new oxygen’, or that ‘you shouldn’t do inversions on your period’.

This course is suitable for anyone who would like to gain a better sense of their breath and body awareness, build strength and overcome the fear of going upside down. Women on their periods also welcome! This course is not suitable, however, for complete beginners.

If you suffer from detached retina, glaucoma, other eye conditions or neck injuries, please email kieran@triyoga.co.uk before signing up.

Investment: £70. Book on the triyoga website.

Working with imbalances: because you are unique

Working with imbalances: because you are unique

“A good marriage between the left and right side is what we are looking for - not symmetry.” – Tom Myers, author of Anatomy Trains.

"Symmetry and balance are very different. Symmetry is man-made. Balance is all that we find in nature, but it's not symmetrical."  - Leslie Kaminoff, author of Yoga Anatomy.

Our bodies may seem symmetrical from the outside, but as soon as you look under the skin, you realise that they are not. Our nervous system doesn’t work symmetrically either. So, as yoga practitioners, why do we put so much emphasis on balance?

Time to re-think symmetry.

This workshop will unfold in three phases:

  • Meditation: we will explore a modified version of a Buddhist practice called Metta Bhavana, to allow ourselves to relate to our bodies without blame or frustration but with genuine interest.

  • Exploration phase: We will use breath, mindful movement and postures to explore our “felt sense”, cultivating a deep connection to our bodies to become more aware of our unique imbalances.

  • Asana practice: After our exploration, we will move, taking into account our discoveries, working with postures to address our unique needs towards a more harmonious marriage between the left and the right side.

You’ll leave with a deeper understanding and knowledge of your own body and how to work with it. You’ll feel more empowered to move in a way that suits your own anatomy and use this knowledge as you practise in class or at home.

This workshop is for everyone, beginners included. It is not intended to diagnose but to explore the subtlety of your own unique body.

Early bird (£25) rate till 22 June (instead of £30). Book on the triyoga website!

Clare says:

The Yoga holiday with Flavia was awesome. It was a very welcome, blissful retreat with no stress, great yoga teaching and excellent food. Flavia is an inspiring teacher with an eye for detail and a very balanced and healthy approach to class, focusing on alignment and breath. I have been on retreats before but this was really a HOLIDAY, where you had the freedom to choose how and what you wanted to do each day instead of being timetabled into activities. The boat trip day was a great highlight and falling asleep to the sound of the waves was a welcome luxury. I had a wonderful restorative time and can't wait to go back next year. if you're looking for a week to rest, reenergise, roll out of bed onto the yoga mat then into the sea then this is the perfect place to be basking in the corfu sunshine. I can't recommend it enough!

Spring retreat in East Sussex 2020

Spring retreat March 2020
Friday 6 March 2020 - Sunday 8 March 2020

After a very inspiring retreat at Tilton House in 2018, my colleague and friend Ligia Cannon and I will be returning to the stunning Tilton House in East Sussex, UK, in Spring 2020.

During the weekend we will practise asana (physical practice), pranayama (breathing practices), meditation and yoga nidra (yogic sleep). Everyone is welcome, especially beginners and intermediate students.

Programme and more details to follow. If you wish to register your interest, please drop me an email.

“Ligia and Flavia organised a simply wonderful retreat at Tilton House. They created a warm, sharing atmosphere, where strangers could come together to improve their practice, surrounded by nature. The flickering fire, the gifted bracelet and the exceptional food and additional classes for those who wanted were all little touches which made the weekend that much more special. These two teachers were generous with both their knowledge and spirit in helping the students to improve different aspects of their yoga practice. ” Rosie.

“Flavia and Ligia are lovely people and fantastic yoga teachers. They bring such a wonderful energy to their events and I can definitely recommend the retreat at Tilton House! ” Emma.

Shifting Seasons: The Art of Transitioning
Friday 30 November 2018 - Sunday 2 December 2018

I'll be co-hosting this retreat with colleague and friend Ligia Cannon at the stunning Tilton House in East Sussex, UK.

In Autumn, when longer days start to wrap around us, we naturally move inwards. It's a time when the trees let go of what is no longer necessary, sending their energy down into the roots preparing for a time of quietness, grounding and nurturing. We can follow their example, gifting us with time for ourselves and with nurturing practices for the body and the mind, returning to our centre during this transitional time and preparing for winter.

During the weekend we will practise asana (physical practice), pranayama (breathing practices), restorative and yoga nidra (yogic sleep). Everyone is welcome, beginners included.

EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT: 10% off  if you book before 31 May 2018.
Investment: £395 for a single room (SOLD OUT), £345 for a twin room. Shared facilities.

Cancellation policy: A non-refundable deposit of £100 is required in order to secure your place. Full balance is due by 31 October 2018.

Workshops in Luxembourg

Fancy a weekend on the continent, only 1 hour away from London?
I've teamed up again with Clare Marie Pilates for a weekend of workshops on 29 + 30 September 2018 in Luxembourg at Studio B.

Exploring the space in-between: Sat 29 September at 13:30–15:30

We live in a goal-oriented society, where all we are told is important is the target, the arrival, the end moment. In this workshop, I would like to invite you to explore the space in between the poses, the experience of shifting from A to B with full awareness, control and mindfulness. Let's give some credit to the journey instead of just the destination! Some thoughts on this on my blog too. All levels welcome.

Investment: 50 EUR. Save 10% if you book all three workshops (135 EUR).

Turn your world upside down: Sun 30 September at 12:00–14:00

Inversions are those postures where the head is below the heart; they slow down your heart beat but necessitate of your full attention to execute leaving you with a calm but incredibly focussed mind. Come and play with inversions, from gentle bridge pose all the way to the headstand! All levels welcome.

Investment: 50 EUR. Save 10% if you book all three workshops (135 EUR).

Floating & Resting: Sun 30 September at 14:30–16:30

Today's lifestyle makes us to forget to look after ourselves and take time to re-balance. Gift yourself with this workshop and actively rest and restore through the lack of physical effort. Being fully supported by props, we allow the body to re-align itself physically, energetically as well as emotionally, shifting the nervous system back towards balance.
All levels welcome.

Investment: 50 EUR. Save 10% if you book all three workshops (135 EUR).

BOOKINGS:
Please contact Clare Marie Pilates & Wellness at claremariepilates@gmail.com or visit www.claremariepilates.com

Cancellation Policy:
Please note that cancellations made within 7 days of any workshop booked will be subject to a 100% cancellation fee. Cancellations received within 10 days will be subject to a 75% cancellation fee. Cancellations received before 14 days of the event will be subject to a 50% cancellation fee.

Floating & Resting

Floating & Resting

Restorative yoga is the practice of actively resting. It is based on the lack of physical effort to allow the body to re-align itself physically, energetically and emotionally, shifting the nervous system back towards balance.

If you are feeling drained, you can't easily move due to restrictions in the body or illness, or if you feel your mind is going fast and you crave for slowing it down, come along to experience a moment of pause.

Felicity says:

"I'm not a regular or experienced yoga practitioner but the idea of learning about active resting really appealed to me. This class opened my eyes to the difference between the passive resting we tend to engage in when we slump on the settee after a hard day, and a more intentional form of resting that involves taking care to position one's body in ways that are truly relaxing and beneficial.
Flavia's class was small and welcoming. She gave excellent instructions and was on hand to help with any tricky poses. After the class I felt so relaxed I had the best night's sleep I'd had in a long time.  I'd really recommend others give it a try!"

Investment: £15 (+ £1.31 booking fee)

Friday 10 August, 19.30-21.00, Yoganest, 27 Old Ford Road, E2 9PL.

Booking required: Book via Eventbrite. 24-hour cancellation policy applies.

Happy Feet! workshop

Happy Feet! workshop

3 arches, 28 bones (26 + 2 sesamoids), 33 joints, roughly 100 tendons, ligaments and muscles - the soles only consists of 4 distinct layers of muscles. Feet are a marvellous piece of engineering which, sadly... we regularly ignore!

In this workshop we will look at the feet with renewed interest, wake up the layers of muscles through pada bandha (foot lock) and look at how we practise poses with renewed attention to our foundations: just like with buildings, a solid, energised base allows the rest of the pose to flourish above.

However, it’s not just about the foundations, so we will also look at how a good use of the feet enlivens poses even when they are up in the air!

Sat 10 March, 18.00-20.00, at Total Chi, Baker Street.
Investment: £32.50 for Total Chi members (current offer: first month of membership is free!), or £40 for non-members.

Workshops in Luxembourg

Fancy a weekend on the continent, only 1 hour away from London?
I've teamed up with Clare Marie Pilates for a weekend of workshops on 18 + 19 November 2017 in Luxembourg at Yogaloft.

Saturday 18 Nov, 14.00-16.00: Headstand: getting over the fear of going upside down

In this workshop we will explore headstand, preparing the body with a strong physical practice, and creating a supportive environment where we can explore what blocks us to get up into headstand: is it our body or is it fear that stops us from doing so?
Note: For students with no neck or head injuries, and with at least one year of consistent practice.

Sunday 19 Nov, 12.00-14.00: Letting go: a heart opening workshop

We will focus on opening the upper back and heart area, actively counteracting our everyday sitting posture whilst melting away our emotional barriers. This workshop will focus mainly on  physical practice (asana), but will also include compassionate communication work and a short meditation. It would work its magic more deeply coupled up wth the (following) Restorative workshop.
Note: All levels welcome apart from complete beginners.

Sunday 19 Nov: 14.30-16.30: Restorative yoga: the art of active rest

In today's life, it's easy to forget to look after ourselves and take time to re-balance. Gift yourself with this workshop and actively rest and restore through the lack of physical effort. Exhale & let go: A heart opening workshop

This workshop is designed to open the upper back, the chest and the heart area. Creating space across the front of the body and working with the space in between the shoulder blades, we will actively counteract our everyday sitting posture.

On a more subtle level, we will try and let go of the armour we put on every day to face the world, working towards allowing ourselves to feel honest about who we are and our vulnerabilities and, above all, responding to all this with kindness.

We will focus mainly on asana (postures) practice, but will also include compassionate communication work and a short meditation to finish.

Suitable for everyone apart from complete beginners.

Details:

Investment: £30.
